About this sitemap generator

An XML sitemap is a file that lists the pages you want search engines to find, with optional hints such as when each page last changed. This generator builds one from a plain list: write each URL on its own line, optionally followed by a last-modified date, a change frequency, and a priority separated by vertical bars. It turns relative paths into full addresses, removes query strings and fragments if you ask, and can add image entries and hreflang alternates for multilingual sites. Before you copy the file it checks for duplicates, invalid dates, and URLs on other hosts.

How to create an XML sitemap

  1. Enter your site and URLs. Type the Site URL, then list your pages under URLs, one per line. Use a path such as /about or a full address. Press an example to see the row format.
  2. Add details if you want them. After a URL, add a date, change frequency, and priority separated by vertical bars. Add Image rows or Language alternates for those features.
  3. Choose the options. Set a Default change frequency and priority, and tick or untick the checkboxes for dates, query strings, and fragments.
  4. Press Generate sitemap. Read the Checks, then copy the XML or download it as sitemap.xml and follow the Publishing checklist.

Frequently asked questions

How do I write the rows?

Each row is the URL, then optionally the date, change frequency, and priority, separated by vertical bars, like /pricing|2026-01-20|monthly|0.8. Leave a part empty to use the default, and lines starting with # are ignored.

Do change frequency and priority matter?

Google ignores both. The last-modified date is the only hint it uses, and only when it is accurate. Include dates you can keep honest and leave the other two blank if in doubt.

How do the image and hreflang rows work?

An image row is a page followed by image addresses, and an alternate row is a page followed by language:URL pairs, such as fr:/fr/page. Each language version should list all versions, including itself, plus x-default.

Why should I remove query strings?

Tracking and sorting parameters create many addresses for one page. A sitemap should list one clean, canonical address per page, so removing the query string avoids duplicates.

How big can a sitemap be?

A single file may hold up to 50,000 URLs and be 50 MB uncompressed. Bigger sites use several sitemap files, listed together in a sitemap index file.
