About this word scramble generator
Word scrambles are a simple way to practise spelling and vocabulary: each word’s letters are shuffled and the player puts them back in order. This generator turns any list of words into a puzzle. Easy mode keeps the first and last letters in place, which helps younger learners; medium shuffles every letter; hard also hides how long each word is. The order of the words is shuffled too, and teachers can make up to three versions of the same list so neighbours cannot copy. How to make a word scramble
- Enter your words. Type or paste words one per line, such as this week’s spelling list, or press a word set.
- Choose the settings. Pick a difficulty and the number of versions, add a title, and choose whether to show length hints and a timer.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the difficulty levels?
Easy keeps the first and last letters where they belong, so only the middle is mixed. Medium shuffles every letter. Hard shuffles every letter and hides the length hint.
Why make several versions?
Each version uses the same words in a different order with different scrambles. Handing out versions A, B, and C in a classroom makes copying from a neighbour much harder.
How do I print the worksheet?
Press Print worksheet. Only the puzzle is printed, with a blank line for each answer, and the reveal buttons are hidden. Switch versions first to print each one.
Can I use phrases or names?
Yes. Each word in a phrase is scrambled separately and the spaces stay in place, so sea lion becomes something like aes inol. Capital letters are kept.
Can a word come out unscrambled?
The generator reshuffles any word that comes out unchanged. Only words whose letters are all the same, such as aa, cannot be scrambled, and they are listed in the summary.
