About this VTT to TXT converter

WebVTT (.vtt) is the caption format used on the web and by YouTube. Besides the text it holds timing lines, positioning settings, styling tags, voice tags, and NOTE comments, none of which belong in a transcript. This converter strips all of that and gives you the words as lines, a single paragraph, one sentence per line, or a transcript with timestamps. YouTube’s automatic captions roll: each caption repeats the line shown before it, so a naive copy doubles every sentence. The duplicate filter removes words that repeat from the end of one caption to the start of the next, leaving each phrase once.

How to convert VTT to text

  1. Add the captions. Paste the VTT text, open a .vtt file downloaded from YouTube or another site, or press an example.
  2. Choose the output and cleaning. Pick lines, a paragraph, sentences, or a timestamped transcript, and choose what to remove.
  3. Press Convert to text. Copy the transcript or download it as a .txt file.

Frequently asked questions

Why does text from YouTube captions repeat?

Auto-generated captions scroll, so each cue shows the previous line again above the new one. With Remove repeated lines on, the overlapping words are dropped and each phrase appears once.

What happens to voice tags like <v Anna>?

They become “Anna:” in front of the line, so you can still tell who is speaking. Tick Remove speaker labels to drop the names completely.

Are NOTE and STYLE blocks removed?

Yes. NOTE comments, STYLE and REGION blocks, the WEBVTT header, cue identifiers, and cue settings such as align:start are all left out of the text.

Can I convert SRT files here as well?

Yes. SRT uses commas instead of dots in its timestamps, but the captions are read the same way, so you can use this tool for either format.

How is the reading time worked out?

It assumes an average silent reading speed of about 238 words per minute and rounds to the nearest minute, with one minute as the minimum.
