About this text to speech reader
This reader uses the Web Speech API built into modern browsers, so the voices come from your own device and the text is not uploaded to a server. Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, and ChromeOS all ship with several voices, often in many languages, and some browsers add higher-quality online voices. Long text is split into sentence-sized pieces so every browser reads it reliably, and each word is highlighted as it is spoken where the voice reports its position. Listening to text helps with proofreading, studying, language learning, and resting your eyes, and it supports people with dyslexia or low vision.
How to have text read aloud
- Add your text. Type or paste anything you want to hear, or press an example.
- Choose the voice. Pick a voice that matches the language of the text, then set the speed, pitch, and volume.
- Press Read aloud. Follow the highlighted words, and use Pause, Resume, and Stop. Press Read aloud again to start over with new settings.
Frequently asked questions
Why are the voices different on each device?
The voices are provided by your operating system and browser, not by this site. Chrome, Edge, and Safari each offer their own set, and you can usually install more in your system settings.
Can I download the speech as an MP3?
No. Browsers play synthesized speech directly and do not let websites record it, so the audio cannot be saved as a file here.
Why are words not highlighted with some voices?
Highlighting relies on the voice reporting each word as it speaks. Some voices, especially online ones, do not, so the reading still works but the highlight only moves by sentence.
How do I read text in another language?
Choose a voice for that language, shown in brackets after its name, such as es-ES for Spanish. An English voice will read other languages with English pronunciation.
Is my text sent anywhere?
With built-in system voices, everything stays on your device. Some browsers use online voices for certain options, in which case the text is sent to that browser maker’s speech service.
