About this SRT time shift tool
Subtitles drift out of sync when they were made for a different release of a video: a version with a longer intro, a cut scene, or a different frame rate. If every line is off by the same amount, a fixed shift fixes it. If the gap grows through the film, the subtitles were timed for another speed; syncing to two lines, one near the start and one near the end, stretches every timing in between to match. Frame-rate conversion handles the classic 25 fps (PAL) and 23.976 fps (film) mismatch directly. Text and formatting are kept, subtitles are renumbered, and nothing leaves your browser.
How to fix subtitle timing
- Add the subtitles. Paste the SRT text or open the .srt file, or press an example.
- Measure the offset. Play the video and note how early or late a line appears. For drift, note the correct start times of an early and a late line.
- Shift and check. Choose the mode, enter the amount or the reference times, press Shift timing, compare before and after, and download the new file.
Frequently asked questions
My subtitles appear too early. Which direction do I choose?
Choose Later. Subtitles that show up before the speech need their times increased, for example by 2 seconds. If they appear after the speech, choose Earlier.
The offset gets bigger as the film goes on. How do I fix that?
That is drift from a speed difference. Use Sync to two lines with one subtitle near the start and one near the end, or try converting 25 fps to 23.976 fps, which fixes the most common case.
Can I shift only part of the file?
Yes. In Fixed shift, set Start from subtitle # to the first line that is wrong. Earlier subtitles keep their times, which helps after an inserted scene or ad break.
What happens to times that go below zero?
They are set to 00:00:00,000 and counted in the result, so you can see that some opening lines may now overlap or need trimming.
Does it work with VTT files?
You can paste WebVTT captions and they will be read, but the result is written as SRT with comma milliseconds. Use a VTT converter afterwards if your player needs VTT.
