About this SHA-512 generator
SHA-512 is the largest member of the SHA-2 family and produces a 512-bit hash, written as 128 hexadecimal characters. On 64-bit processors it is often as fast as SHA-256, and it is a common choice for checksums of large downloads, for signing and key derivation, and for Linux password hashes. Hash text or a whole file here and paste the checksum a publisher lists into Expected hash to confirm that your copy is exact. The hashing runs in your browser, so your input never leaves your device.
How to generate a SHA-512 hash
- Add text or a file. Type or paste text, press an example, or press Hash a file to hash a file’s exact bytes.
- Pick the format. Lowercase hex is the usual format; choose uppercase hex or Base64 if your system expects it. Paste an expected hash to compare.
- Press Generate SHA-512 hash. The hash appears below, with a match or no-match message when you pasted an expected hash.
- Copy the hash. Press Copy hash, or copy it in another format from the list.
Frequently asked questions
How long is a SHA-512 hash?
Always 512 bits: 128 hexadecimal characters, or 88 characters in Base64, whether the input is a single letter or a large file.
What is the SHA-512 hash of an empty input?
It is cf83e1357eefb8bdf1542850d66d8007d620e4050b5715dc83f4a921d36ce9ce47d0d13c5d85f2b0ff8318d2877eec2f63b931bd47417a81a538327af927da3e. Leave the input empty and press the button to see it.
Is SHA-512 better than SHA-256?
It has a larger output and security margin, and it can be faster on 64-bit machines, but both are considered secure. Use whichever the system you are checking against expects.
Can I store passwords with a plain SHA-512 hash?
Not on its own. A fast hash lets attackers test billions of guesses per second. Use bcrypt, Argon2, or a salted, many-round scheme built for passwords.
Why does my SHA-512 differ from another tool?
Every byte counts. Text is hashed as UTF-8 with LF line breaks, including spaces and a final line break, so a trailing space or a Windows line break elsewhere changes the hash. Files are hashed byte for byte.
