About this SHA-224 generator

SHA-224 is a member of the SHA-2 family that produces a 224-bit hash, written as 56 hexadecimal characters. It runs the SHA-256 algorithm from a different starting state and keeps only the first 224 bits, which suits protocols that need a shorter digest than SHA-256 while keeping 112 bits of collision resistance. Hash text or a whole file here and paste a published checksum into Expected hash to confirm your copy is identical. Browsers do not provide SHA-224 natively, so this page uses its own implementation, still entirely on your device.

How to generate a SHA-224 hash

  1. Add text or a file. Type or paste text, press an example, or press Hash a file to hash a file’s exact bytes.
  2. Pick the format. Lowercase hex is the usual format; choose uppercase hex or Base64 if your system expects it. Paste an expected hash to compare.
  3. Press Generate SHA-224 hash. The hash appears below, with a match or no-match message when you pasted an expected hash.
  4. Copy the hash. Press Copy hash, or copy it in another format from the list.

Frequently asked questions

How is SHA-224 different from SHA-256?

SHA-224 starts from different initial values and cuts the result to 224 bits. The two never produce related hashes, so the SHA-224 of a text is not a shortened SHA-256 of the same text.

How long is a SHA-224 hash?

Always 224 bits: 56 hexadecimal characters, or 40 characters in Base64, whatever the size of the input.

What is the SHA-224 hash of an empty input?

It is d14a028c2a3a2bc9476102bb288234c415a2b01f828ea62ac5b3e42f. Leave the input empty and press the button to see it; the tool hashes zero bytes.

Why does my SHA-224 differ from another tool?

Every byte counts. Text is hashed as UTF-8 with LF line breaks, including spaces and a final line break, so a trailing space or a Windows line break elsewhere changes the hash. Files are hashed byte for byte.

Is SHA-224 secure?

Yes, it has no known practical attacks. Its 112-bit collision strength is lower than SHA-256’s 128 bits, so pick SHA-256 or longer unless a standard asks for SHA-224.
