About this accent remover

Many systems still expect plain letters: URL slugs, file names, usernames, old databases, and search that should find "Muller" when someone types "Müller". This tool removes accents and other diacritics from Latin and Greek letters in one step, so é becomes e, ñ becomes n, and ü becomes u. Letters whose mark is part of the letter itself are spelled the usual way: ł becomes l, ø becomes o, đ becomes d, ß becomes ss, æ becomes ae, and œ becomes oe. Punctuation, numbers, and other scripts are left untouched.

How to remove accents

  1. Paste your text. Paste names, addresses, or any text, or press an example. An example only fills the box.
  2. Press Remove accents. The plain text appears below, followed by a list of every letter that changed and how often.
  3. Copy or download. Press Copy text, or Download to save the result as a text file.

Frequently asked questions

What happens to German ß, æ, and œ?

They are written out the usual way: ß becomes ss, æ becomes ae, and œ becomes oe. Capitals follow the next letter, so Æsir becomes Aesir and STRAẞE becomes STRASSE.

Is ü converted to u or ue?

To u, like every other accented letter. German spelling sometimes writes ü as ue; if you need that, use Find and Replace Text on the result.

Which languages are supported?

Every language written in the Latin or Greek alphabet, including French, Spanish, Portuguese, German, Polish, Czech, Turkish, Vietnamese, and Greek. Cyrillic, Arabic, Hindi, Chinese, and other scripts are left as they are, because their marks are part of the spelling.

Is the result pure ASCII?

For Latin-script text, yes, apart from punctuation such as curly quotes or dashes, which are not accents. Letters from other scripts stay as they are.

Do upper-case letters stay upper-case?

Yes. É becomes E and Ł becomes L; only the accent is removed.
