About this paragraph counter

A paragraph is a block of text set apart from the rest, and tools disagree on where one ends. This counter lets you choose: in blank-line mode a paragraph is any run of lines between empty lines, which fits essays, articles, and web copy; in every-line mode each non-empty line counts, which suits lists and chat logs. Beside the total you get words, sentences, and characters for each paragraph, a fingerprint showing how their lengths compare, a flow balance score, and the words you use most often.

How to count paragraphs

  1. Add your text. Paste your text into the box or press an example. Press Clear to start over.
  2. Choose where paragraphs start. Pick After a blank line for normal writing or On every line to count each non-empty line.
  3. Press Count paragraphs. The totals appear at the top of the results.
  4. Read the details. Use the fingerprint and the Each paragraph table to find paragraphs that are too long or too short, and check the Keyword pulse for repeated words.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as a blank line?

A line with nothing on it or only spaces and tabs. Two or more blank lines in a row still separate paragraphs once, so extra spacing never creates empty paragraphs.

What does the flow balance score mean?

It compares paragraph lengths in words. A score near 100 means the paragraphs are about the same size, and a low score means a few paragraphs are much longer or shorter than the rest. It needs at least two paragraphs.

How is the keyword pulse chosen?

It lists the five most repeated words of three or more letters, ignoring common words such as the, and, and with, and ignoring numbers. Words are compared in lower case.

Why does a heading count as a paragraph?

The counter works from the layout, not the meaning. A heading on its own line between blank lines is a block of text, so it counts. Remove headings first if you want body paragraphs only.

Does a line break inside a paragraph start a new one?

Not in blank-line mode: lines that follow each other with no empty line between them stay in the same paragraph, and the Lines column shows how many there are. Use every-line mode to split them.
