About this number to word converter

Numbers are spelled out on checks, in legal documents and contracts, in formal writing, and when teaching children to read numbers. This converter follows standard American English: hyphens join tens and ones (forty-two), “and” is not used inside whole numbers, and large numbers use the short scale, so a billion is a thousand million. Ordinals change only the last word (one hundred twenty-first). Currency amounts are rounded to whole cents and given both in full and in the “and 75/100 dollars” style printed on checks. Decimals are read digit by digit after the word “point”.

How to write a number in words

  1. Enter the number. Type it with or without commas. Decimals and a minus sign are allowed, up to 999 trillion.
  2. Choose the style. Pick cardinal for amounts, ordinal for positions such as 21st, or currency to write dollars and cents for a check.
  3. Press Convert to words. Copy the version in the letter case you need. The reference table above the button shows common numbers in words.

Frequently asked questions

How do I write a check amount in words?

Write the dollars in words, then the cents as a fraction of 100. $1,250.75 becomes “One thousand two hundred fifty and 75/100 dollars”. Choose Currency to get this line ready to copy.

Should I write “one hundred and five” or “one hundred five”?

American usage, followed here, leaves out “and” in whole numbers: one hundred five. British English usually includes it, as in one hundred and five. Both are understood.

When do I use hyphens in numbers?

Hyphenate the compound numbers from twenty-one to ninety-nine, such as thirty-seven or ninety-nine. Words like hundred, thousand, and million are not hyphenated.

How are decimals written in words?

Say the whole number, then “point”, then each digit on its own. 3.14159 is “three point one four one five nine”. For money, the cents are read as a number instead.

How big a number can I convert?

Up to 999,999,999,999,999, which is nine hundred ninety-nine trillion nine hundred ninety-nine billion and so on. Larger numbers are rarely written out in words.
