About this number extractor

This extractor pulls numeric values out of any text so you can total an invoice, analyze response times in a log, or copy figures from a report into a spreadsheet. It reads whole numbers, decimals, negative numbers, amounts with thousands commas such as 1,299.99, and scientific notation such as 6.02e23, and it treats the hyphens in dates and codes such as A-12 as separators rather than minus signs. Choose which kinds of numbers to keep, sort them, and get the count, sum, average, median, smallest, and largest value in the same step.

How to extract numbers

  1. Paste your text. Paste any text that contains numbers, or press an example. An example only fills the box.
  2. Choose what to keep. Pick all numbers, whole numbers, decimals, or scientific notation, the order, the separator, and whether to remove duplicates and include negatives.
  3. Press Extract numbers. The numbers appear below with the sum, average, median, and range.
  4. Copy the result. Press Copy numbers and paste them into a spreadsheet or calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How are numbers like 1,299.99 handled?

A comma followed by exactly three digits is read as a thousands separator, so 1,299.99 becomes 1299.99. Commas between numbers in a list, as in 12, 15, still separate them.

When is a hyphen a minus sign?

Only when it is not attached to a letter or digit before it. -15 and "discount -50" are negative, but the hyphens in 2026-03-07 and A-12 are separators, so the date gives 2026, 03, and 07.

Are percentages and currency symbols kept?

Only the number is extracted: $39.50 gives 39.50 and 15% gives 15. The symbols themselves are not included.

What about decimal commas such as 12,50?

A comma followed by two digits is not a thousands separator, so 12,50 is read as two numbers, 12 and 50. Replace decimal commas with dots first for European formats.

How is the median calculated?

The numbers are ordered from smallest to largest; the median is the middle one, or the average of the two middle ones when the count is even.
