About this MD5 generator

MD5 turns any input into a 128-bit fingerprint, written as 32 hexadecimal characters. The same input always gives the same hash, and changing a single character changes the whole hash, which makes MD5 useful for checking that a download or a copied file is intact, for cache keys, and for spotting duplicate content. Paste the checksum a website publishes into Expected hash and this tool tells you whether your text or file matches. MD5 is no longer safe for passwords or digital signatures; use bcrypt, Argon2, or SHA-256 for anything security related.

How to generate an MD5 hash

  1. Add text or a file. Type or paste text, press an example, or press Hash a file to hash a file’s exact bytes.
  2. Pick the format. Lowercase hex is the usual format; choose uppercase hex or Base64 if your system expects it. Paste an expected hash to compare.
  3. Press Generate MD5 hash. The hash appears below, with a match or no-match message when you pasted an expected hash.
  4. Copy the hash. Press Copy hash, or copy it in another format from the list.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my MD5 differ from another tool?

Hashes change with every byte. This tool hashes text as UTF-8 with LF line breaks and keeps spaces and a final line break, so a trailing space or a Windows line break elsewhere gives a different hash. Files are hashed byte for byte.

Is MD5 safe for passwords?

No. MD5 is fast and has known collisions, so leaked MD5 password hashes can be cracked quickly. Use bcrypt or Argon2 for passwords and SHA-256 when you need a secure checksum.

Can an MD5 hash be reversed?

Not mathematically, but short or common inputs such as "password" are listed in public lookup tables, so their hashes are recognized instantly. That is another reason not to use MD5 for secrets.

Does the expected hash have to be lowercase?

No. The comparison ignores letter case and spaces around the hash, and it also accepts the hash in Base64.

Is my file uploaded to hash it?

No. The file is read and hashed by your browser, so it never leaves your device.
