About this Markdown table generator
Markdown tables are tedious to type by hand: every row needs pipes, and the header needs a divider line. This generator does that for you. Copy cells from a spreadsheet, paste a CSV export, or type your own rows, and it produces a table that renders on GitHub, GitLab, Notion, and most documentation tools. Columns are padded so the raw text lines up, pipe characters inside cells are escaped, and the alignment markers in the divider row follow your choice of left, center, or right. The preview shows how the table will look.
How to make a Markdown table
- Paste your data. Paste rows from a spreadsheet or CSV file, with one row per line. Press an example to see the format.
- Choose the separator. Leave Separator on Detect automatically, or pick comma, tab, semicolon, or pipe if detection guesses wrong.
- Set the layout. Choose a Column alignment, and untick First row is the header if your data has no header row.
- Press Generate Markdown table. Copy the Markdown or download it as a file, and check the table under Preview.
Frequently asked questions
How does automatic separator detection work?
It counts commas, tabs, semicolons, and pipes on the first line, ignoring any inside quotes, and uses the one that appears most. Pasting from a spreadsheet gives tabs, which are detected reliably.
What if my data has no header row?
Untick First row is the header. Markdown tables must have a header, so the generator adds an empty one and keeps all of your rows in the body of the table.
How are pipes and line breaks inside cells handled?
A pipe character in a cell is escaped with a backslash so it does not split the column, and a line break inside a quoted cell becomes a br tag so the cell stays on one line.
What if some rows have fewer cells than others?
Short rows are filled with empty cells so every row has the same number of columns as the longest one.
Can I paste an existing Markdown table?
Yes. Choose the pipe separator, or leave detection on. Outer pipes and the divider row are removed, so you can change the alignment or fix the spacing of a table that you already have.
