About this Magic 8-Ball

The Magic 8-Ball is a toy fortune teller from the 1950s: you ask a yes-or-no question, shake it, and an answer floats up in a little window. Inside the real toy is a twenty-sided die with ten positive answers, five non-committal ones, and five negative ones. This online version uses the same twenty classic answers in the same proportions, picked with your browser’s secure random generator, so half of all answers lean yes. Your recent questions are kept in this browser only. It is for fun: use it to break a tie, liven up a party, or make a silly decision, not for anything that really matters.

How to use the Magic 8-Ball

  1. Think of a question. Type a question that can be answered with yes or no, or press an example.
  2. Press Shake the ball. The ball shakes and an answer appears in its window. Turn on the sound for extra drama.
  3. Ask again. Ask another question or the same one again. Your recent questions and answers are listed below.

Frequently asked questions

How many answers does the Magic 8-Ball have?

Twenty: ten affirmative, such as It is certain; five non-committal, such as Ask again later; and five negative, such as My reply is no.

Is the Magic 8-Ball more likely to say yes?

Yes. Half of the twenty answers are positive, a quarter are vague, and a quarter are negative, just like the original toy.

Can I ask the same question twice?

Of course. Each shake is independent, so you may get a different answer every time.

Are my questions stored anywhere?

Only in this browser, so you can see your recent ones. They are never sent to a server, and Clear removes them.

Should I make real decisions with it?

No. It is a game based on pure chance. It is great for fun choices, but think carefully about anything important.
