About this how long ago calculator

This calculator measures the time between a past moment and right now, in your own time zone. The main result counts whole years, then whole months, then days, which is how people naturally describe a span, and keeps ticking every second. The same span is also given as a total in each unit, from years down to seconds, plus heartbeats at a typical resting rate. Anniversary milestones show when the 1st, 5th, 10th, 25th, 50th, and 100th anniversaries fell or will fall, and adding your birth date shows what share of your life has passed since then.

Frequently asked questions

How are months counted?

Whole calendar months are counted from the start date, so 31 January to 28 February is one month, then the remaining days are added. This matches how ages and anniversaries are usually counted.

Does it account for leap years?

Yes. Real calendar dates are used, so leap days are included in the day totals and in the years-months-days breakdown.

Which time zone is used?

Your device’s time zone. The date and time you enter are taken as local time, and the counter compares them with your current local time.

Why does the result keep changing?

The counter updates every second while the page is open, so the seconds, minutes, and totals always reflect the current moment.

Can I use it for future dates?

No, this tool is for past dates. For upcoming events, use the How Long Until calculator, which counts down to a future date.
