About this grade calculator
Most courses grade in one of two ways. With weighted percentages, each assessment counts for a fixed share of the course, such as homework 20% and the final exam 40%, and your grade is the weighted average of your percentage scores. With total points, every point counts the same and your grade is the points you earned divided by the points possible. This calculator handles both. Any assessment without a score, and in weighted mode any weight not yet listed, is treated as work still to come, so you can see your grade so far and the average you need on the rest to reach each letter grade on the scale you choose.
How to calculate your grade
- Choose the scale and grading method. Pick the letter scale your school uses, and whether the course uses weighted percentages or total points. Check your syllabus if you are not sure.
- Enter your assessments. Add a row for each assignment, quiz, or exam with your score, the maximum score, and its weight. Leave the score empty for work you have not done yet.
- Press Calculate grade. Read your current grade and letter, then use the table of needed scores to plan for the final exam or remaining work.
Frequently asked questions
How is a weighted grade calculated?
Each score is turned into a percentage and multiplied by its weight, and the results are added and divided by the total weight graded so far. Homework 92% at 20%, a quiz 85% at 15%, and a midterm 78% at 25% give 50.65 ÷ 60 = 84.42%.
How do I find what I need on the final exam?
Add the final as a row with its weight and leave the score empty. The table shows the average you need on it for each letter grade, and marks grades that are already secured or no longer reachable.
What if my weights do not add up to 100%?
In weighted mode, any share below 100% that you have not listed is treated as work still to come. Weights that add up to more than 100% are flagged so you can fix them.
Should I use weighted or points mode?
Use points mode when your syllabus simply adds up all points, such as 450 out of 500. Use weighted mode when categories count for set percentages of the final grade.
Can a needed score be over 100%?
Yes. It means the grade can only be reached with extra credit, because even a perfect score on the remaining work would not be enough. Those rows are marked as not reachable.
