About this GPA calculator
A grade point average turns letter grades into one number. Each grade has a point value, such as 4.0 for an A and 3.0 for a B on the US scale, and each course counts in proportion to its credits. Multiplying a grade’s points by the course credits gives its quality points, and the GPA is total quality points divided by total credits. This calculator supports the common US 4.0 scale, the 4.3 scale used by schools that give extra credit for an A+, and typical Canadian, Australian, Indian, and UK scales. Point values vary between schools, so check your own institution’s table for official figures.

Frequently asked questions
How is GPA calculated?
Multiply each course’s grade points by its credits to get quality points, add them up, and divide by the total credits. An A (4.0) in a 4-credit course and a B (3.0) in a 3-credit course give (16 + 9) ÷ 7 = 3.57.
What is the difference between the 4.0 and 4.3 scales?
On the standard 4.0 scale, A+ and A are both worth 4.0. Some schools reward an A+ with 4.3 instead, so the highest possible GPA is 4.3. All other grades have the same value on both scales.
Do pass/fail courses count?
Usually not. Courses graded only pass or fail carry no grade points, so leave them out. A failed graded course does count, as an F with 0 points.
How do I work out my cumulative GPA?
Enter every graded course from all your terms in one list, up to 50 courses. Because each course is weighted by its credits, the result is the same cumulative GPA your school calculates from the same grade table.
What GPA do I need for Latin honors?
Many US colleges use about 3.5 for cum laude, 3.7 for magna cum laude, and 3.9 for summa cum laude, which is what the standing shown here is based on. The exact cut-offs differ by school.
