About this fraction simplifier
A fraction is in lowest terms, or simplest form, when its numerator and denominator have no common factor other than 1. To get there, divide both by their greatest common factor (GCF). This simplifier finds the GCF by breaking both numbers into prime factors and matching the ones they share, which is also the clearest way to see why it works: in 48/72, the factors 2 × 2 × 2 × 3 appear on both top and bottom, so they cancel and leave 2/3. The tool also gives a few equivalent fractions, the mixed number for improper fractions, and the exact decimal and percent.
How to simplify a fraction
- Enter the fraction. Type the numerator in the top box and the denominator in the bottom box, or press an example.
- Press Simplify fraction. The fraction is divided by the greatest common factor of the two numbers and shown in lowest terms.
- Check the working. Read the prime factorizations and the factors that cancel, and use the mixed number, decimal, or percent if you need another form.
Frequently asked questions
How do I simplify a fraction by hand?
Find the greatest common factor of the numerator and denominator and divide both by it. For 36/48, the GCF is 12, and 36 ÷ 12 = 3 and 48 ÷ 12 = 4, so 36/48 = 3/4.
How do I know a fraction is already in simplest form?
It is in simplest form when the only number that divides both the top and the bottom exactly is 1. 7/11 cannot be reduced, because 7 and 11 are both prime.
Can I simplify an improper fraction?
Yes. 45/12 reduces to 15/4, which is 3 3/4 as a mixed number. Simplifying and converting to a mixed number are separate steps, and the tool shows both.
What are equivalent fractions?
They are fractions that look different but have the same value, made by multiplying the top and bottom by the same number. 2/3, 4/6, and 20/30 are all equivalent.
What happens with negative fractions?
The minus sign is moved to the numerator and the rest is simplified as usual. Both -10/4 and 10/-4 become -5/2.
