The first row must name the columns. start, end, and text are required (start_time, end_time, subtitle, or caption also work); other columns are ignored. Write \n for a line break inside a subtitle.

About this CSV to SRT converter

Writing subtitles in a spreadsheet is convenient: one row per line, columns for times and text, easy sorting and translating. Video players, however, want SRT. This converter reads your CSV, finds the start, end, and text columns by their headers in any order, and writes a correctly numbered SRT file. It understands decimal seconds such as 4.5, SRT timestamps such as 00:00:04,500, and clock times such as 0:01:30. Quoted cells with commas are handled, extra columns like speaker or notes are ignored, rows without text are skipped, and overlapping times are flagged so you can review them.

How to convert CSV to SRT

  1. Prepare the CSV. Make sure the first row has start, end, and text headers. Export the sheet from Excel or Google Sheets as CSV.
  2. Paste or open it. Paste the CSV text, open the file, or press an example to see the accepted formats.
  3. Press Convert to SRT. Check any warnings, then copy the subtitles or download the .srt file for your video player or editor.

Frequently asked questions

Which time formats can I use?

Decimal seconds (12.5), SRT timestamps (00:00:12,500), and clock times with or without milliseconds (0:00:12 or 0:00:12.500). You can mix them in the same file.

Why must SRT timestamps be in quotes?

SRT uses a comma before the milliseconds, which is also the CSV separator. Quoting the cell, as spreadsheets do automatically, keeps the timestamp in one column.

Can the columns be in any order?

Yes. Columns are found by their header names, so start, end, and text can be anywhere, and extra columns such as id or speaker are ignored.

How do I add a line break inside a subtitle?

Type \n in the text cell, or put a real line break inside a quoted cell. Both become a second subtitle line in the SRT file.

What happens to rows without text?

They are skipped and counted, so blank rows or pauses in your sheet do not create empty subtitles.
