About this line wrapping tool
Fixed line lengths are still common: plain-text emails are traditionally wrapped at 72 characters, Git commit bodies at 72, code comments and terminals at 80, and some forms or labels accept only a set number of characters per line. This tool re-flows your text to a width you choose. Smart wrap moves whole words to the next line and only splits a word when it is longer than the limit on its own; hard break cuts at exactly the limit, which suits codes, hashes, and fixed-width data. Blank lines between paragraphs are kept, and characters are counted as you see them, so accented letters and emoji count as one.
How to wrap text at a character limit
- Paste your text. Add the text you want to wrap, or press an example.
- Set the width. Type the maximum line length or press a common width such as 72 or 80, and choose smart wrap or hard break.
- Press Wrap text. Copy or download the result and check the length of each line in the table.
Frequently asked questions
What line length should I use for email?
Plain-text email is traditionally wrapped at 72 characters, which leaves room for > quote marks when people reply. Many people use 70 to 78.
What happens to words longer than the limit?
In smart wrap mode, a word that is longer than the whole line is split across lines, since it cannot fit anywhere. Shorter words are never split.
Are my paragraphs kept?
Yes. Each paragraph is wrapped on its own and blank lines between them stay in place. Single line breaks inside a paragraph are also kept as they are.
When should I use hard break?
Use it for text without meaningful words, such as long codes, Base64, or keys, or when every line must be exactly the same width.
How do I unwrap text again?
Use the Remove Line Breaks tool to join the lines back into flowing paragraphs before wrapping to a new width.
