About this ASCII art generator

ASCII art builds pictures out of plain characters. This generator turns short text into large banner letters, the kind you see at the top of source files, in README files, and in terminal welcome messages. It uses FIGlet fonts, the standard format for text banners since the 1990s, and shows your text in 26 of them at once, from the familiar Standard and Slant to Big, Doom, Graffiti, Star Wars, and the block-style ANSI Shadow. Letters are fitted together the way the figlet command does it, so the output matches what developers get in a terminal.

How to make ASCII art text

  1. Type your text. Type a short word or phrase, or press an example. Each line you type becomes its own banner.
  2. Choose an alignment. With two or more lines, pick Left, Center, or Right to line the banners up.
  3. Press Make ASCII art. All 26 fonts appear below in a fixed-width font, each labelled with its FIGlet name.
  4. Copy a font. Press Copy next to the font you want and paste it somewhere that uses a fixed-width font, such as a code editor.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my ASCII art look crooked after pasting?

The letters only line up in a fixed-width font, where every character is equally wide. Paste it into a code block, a terminal, or an editor using a monospace font, or wrap it in triple backticks in Markdown.

Which characters can I use?

Upper and lower case English letters, digits, spaces, and the punctuation on a standard keyboard. Accented letters, emoji, and other scripts are left out, because FIGlet fonts only draw printable ASCII characters. A few fonts, such as Banner and Block, draw lower case as capitals.

What is FIGlet?

FIGlet is a free program from 1991 that prints text as large letters made of ordinary characters. Its font files are shared widely, so the fonts here match the ones used by the figlet command and by many code editors.

Which fonts are pure ASCII?

Almost all of them, including Standard, Slant, Big, Doom, and Banner, use only keyboard characters and work anywhere. ANSI Shadow and Calvin S use Unicode box-drawing characters, which need a font that includes them.

How long can my text be?

Up to 50 characters per line and 5 lines. Large fonts such as Colossal and Larry 3D are very wide, so short words work best if you need the art to fit in a terminal or a code comment.
