About this acronym generator

An acronym takes letters from the words of a phrase, usually the first letter of each important word, as in NASA or SCUBA. This generator builds six versions at once: standard initials that skip small connecting words, initials of every word, the first two letters of each word, the first letter plus the first vowel (which often makes a sayable word), a dotted form, and PascalCase for code names. Each is scored from 0 to 100 for how easy it is to pronounce, based on its vowels and consonant clusters, and the best one is marked with a star. In reverse, it suggests backronyms: phrases whose initials spell the letters you give, picked from themed word lists.

How to make an acronym

  1. Enter your phrase. Type the full name of your project, team, or product, or press an example.
  2. Set the options. Choose a style or all six, the letter case, and whether small words such as “and” and “of” are skipped.
  3. Generate and copy. Press Generate, compare the scores, and copy the version you like. Switch to Acronym → Phrase to invent words for a set of letters.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an acronym and an initialism?

An acronym is said as a word, like NASA or laser. An initialism is spelled out letter by letter, like FBI or HTML. The pronounceability score hints at which one you will get.

What is a backronym?

A backronym starts from the letters and invents a phrase to fit, such as reading FAST as “Fast Agile Smart Tools”. It is popular for project names, slogans, and team names.

Why are words like “and” and “of” skipped?

Style guides usually leave small connecting words out of acronyms, which is why it is NASA and not NAASA. Untick the option to include every word.

How is the pronounceability score worked out?

It rewards a natural share of vowels and penalizes long consonant clusters, repeated letters, and very long results. Above 80 usually reads as a word; below 40 is usually spelled out.

Can I get different backronym ideas?

Yes. Press Generate again for a fresh set, change the theme for a different tone, or raise the number of phrases to suggest up to eight.
